March is Music in Our Schools Month. We are celebrating by highlighting students who benefit from our music programs. Today, we feature Reid Brown, a sophomore at Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS). He plays the bass trombone in Band Class, and he is also a member of the LDHS Marching Band.
Reid is committed to becoming the best musician he can be. He is in band class for 1.5 hours each school day, practices playing the bass trombone an hour a day on his own when he gets home from school, and practices another hour a week with a private tutor.
During Marching Band Season, July-October, he rehearses twice a week for three hours each rehearsal. He performs with the Marching Band at all football home games and one away game.
This year, he placed 4th in the South Carolina All State Band Auditions. He aims to make it to State next year and plans to hone his scales, solo, vocabulary, and technical skills.
Reid's participation in the Laurens County School District 55 music programs has helped him become motivated to accomplish. He plans to pursue a Music degree from the University of South Carolina.

This is a gentle reminder that you may still give your feedback.
The State Board of Education has the responsibility and duty to adopt the instructional materials used for instruction in the public schools of South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Education facilitates the review and adoption process. Last summer, publishers submitted materials in identified subject areas to Instructional Review Panels, who reviewed and vetted the materials based on predetermined criteria. A state-wide public review was conducted in the fall. Then, the choices were narrowed down for school districts. An Instructional Materials Caravan was organized, and district representatives were invited to listen to presentations from each of the publishers on the final list. Currently, those presentations are being shared with teachers and administrators who will vote on the Math Instructional materials we want to use in Laurens County School District 55. Parents, guardians, and community members may offer feedback on the instructional materials currently on display at the district office.
